Most of us cause harmful emissions of greenhouse gases in our daily lives. One way to reduce that negative impact is to balance those emissions with reductions of emissions somewhere else. This is usually referred to as “carbon off-setting” or to become “climate neutral”. It is quite simple and basically involves the payment of the same amount of emissions oneself has caused, which then will be reduced by someone else.
Although it is not a cure for climate change, carbon off-setting is a useful means of helping to tackle it for several reasons, where the following two are of the most important:
- Carbon off-setting involves measuring emissions from our own activities, helping to raise awareness of our impact. Combined with reducing our own emissions, carbon off-setting can directly address this impact.
- When done in a robust and responsible way, carbon off-setting leads to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions in the area local to the off-setting project.
At Utsläppsrätt.se we offer the service of off-setting through emission allowance (carbon credits) in the European Trading Scheme for greenhouse gases.
